An object is balanced when it does not fall down. Gravity is a force and pulls objects to the core of the Earth. Friction is a force that tries to stop objects from moving. When an object is stable it does not fall even if gently nudged. We learned to balance a variety of shapes using counterweights, and even balanced a pencil on its point. We made twirlers and spinners that were balanced and discovered that weight had an important role in determining balance. A system is a group of objects working together. We constructed mobile systems and balanced them. Then we explored wheel and axle systems to find how size of the wheels played a role in determining the path it would take.
